Guided tours for individual travellers

During the warm months, guided tours of the historic old town or Starkenburg Castle are regularly offered. No registration is required. Only offered in German language. Tickets for all public tours currently have to be purchased from Tourist Information. Address data sheets must also be filled out when purchasing tickets. There is currently a test recommendation for city tours that are open-air events. 
  • City Tours (May - October)
    every Saturday of the month at 2:00 pm – meeting point is the historic market place
    prices: 4.00 € per adult, 2.00 € per child
    duration of the guided city tour: approx. 60 minutes
  • Tours of Starkenburg Castle (May – October)
    every 1st Sunday of the month at 11:00 am – meeting point is the lower castle courtyard (unterer Burghof) as well as on Good Friday and Easter Sunday at 2:00 pm
    prices: 4.00 € per adult, 2.00 € per child, no fee for children smaller than 1.20 m
    duration of the guided castle tour: approx. 60 minutes
  • Lantern Tours (May – October)
    every Saturday at 10:00 pm (no tours during the wine festival) - meeting point is the historic market place
    Prices: 6.00 € per adult, 3.00 € per child
    duration of the guided city tour: approx. 60 minutes
Lantern Tours for individual travellers also take place on a daily basis from 26th – 31st December at 7:00 pm.
 
 

Guided group tours

Guided group tours may be booked throughout the whole year. Should you wish to book a guided tour, please contact the Tourist Information Office. The service team of the Heppenheim Tourist Information Office will also be happy to assist you with any further questions regarding accommodation, restaurants, tours of the vineyards (so-called Weinlagenwanderung). Children or youth groups are offered at special prices.
 
  • Lantern Tours
    The street lamps situated in Heppenheim’s historic old town are decorated with artfully designed silhouette cut-outs. Historically costumed guides will show you through the night time town while telling you old Hessian legends.

    “If stones could speak … “ - discover the castle ruins and learn all about the historical backgrounds of the formerly very important Castle.

  • Heppenheim bit by bit – Heppenheim häppchenweise
    During this very special guided tour, you will get to know the medieval half-timbered houses and restaurants from the inside! Regional dishes as well as some wine will be served during this tour.
    Guided tours starts at 4:30 pm!

  • On secret trails to Starkenburg Castle – Auf geheimen Pfaden zur Starkenburg
    This walking tour up to Starkenburg Castle includes a guided tour of the city as well as of the castle. On your way up to the castle, the guide will provide you with information on viniculture and vineyards. 
    Organisation: guided tour of the city (approx. 1 hour, guided walk up to the castle (approx. 1 hour), guided tour of the castle (approx. 1 hour). The return trip to the old historic town is individually organised. At the castle, there is a nice restaurant (Burgschänke). Larger groups should book in advance.

  • Mill trail tour – Mühlenrundweg
    Where once the mill wheels clacked
    During this guided tour you will learn all about former grain milling and grain grinding procedures. Your tour guide will show you interesting places and buildings to be found in the historic old town as well as the so-called Mühlgraben. Total distance: approx. 2 km.

  • Mill trail tour – Mühlenrundweg
    Mills beside gushing Creeks
    Discover the traces of former mill buildings, remains of mill races and more and find out about the houses where rich and poor millers used to live. Learn much about the life of miller, fires and raids. You will also hear some spooky stories. Total distance: approx. 4.2 km. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

  • From the train station up to the Cathedral – Vom Bahnhof zum Dom
    Discover Heppenheim from a different perspective: join your guide on a trip back to the time of horse-drawn stagecoaches and railway romance, splendid country houses, inns and a department store of the early 20th century. Discover the historic old town with its town wall, places of electoral power and adore the impressive cathedral – Dom der Bergstraße.   • Half-timbered houses and wine
    Enjoy three Heppenheim wines on this tour through the winding alleyways of the historic old town and learn interesting facts about Heppenheim and wine-growing on the Bergstrasse.

  • Half-timbered house tour
    On this tour through the narrow streets of Heppenheim's old town, you will get to know selected half-timbered buildings. Most of them were restored during the renovation of the old town (1985-2005). The historic half-timbered buildings are presented and the different styles are explained. Highlights of the tour are the baroque half-timbered town hall, the oldest half-timbered house in Heppenheim from 1430 and many small hidden half-timbered features.

  • On the traces of the Metzendorf Architects – Auf den Spuren des Architekten Metzendorf
    Between 1897 and 1905, the two brothers of Heppenheim, Georg and Heinrich Metzendorf – also known as the “master builders” of the Bergstraße region, developed their very characteristic traditional local style by which they gave this region its own characteristic touch. Explore the famous “Höhnsche Villenviertel”, the former “Kaufhaus Mainzer” and other architectonical masterpieces constructed by the Metzendorf brothers in Heppenheim.

  • Wayside stories – Geschichten am Wegesrand
    The south of Heppenheim, next to the border of Baden, is a landscape full of secrets and oral tradition. During this walking tour through the sunny vineyards and a quiet, but somewhat spooky valley, named Bombachtal, past times come alive. You will hear old stories and sagas along the way.

    Our experienced tour guides will accompany your coach group (with your own coach) to the most beautiful places on the Bergstrasse and in the Odenwald. Your program can be arranged individually. Let yourself be enchanted by the nature, culture and history of our region.

    For groups of more than 25 people, a second tour guide may have to be booked for some stops. Alternative meeting points outside Heppenheim can also be booked for a travel fee.

  • Rat-Theatre for children – Rattentheater für Kinder
    With his “vendor-tray-theatre”, the tour guide Uwe Pfeifer, accompanied by the witty rat Ratz Pfeifer will take children on a special journey into the mystical world of Hessian stories and sagas.

  • Mill tour – from grain to bread – Vom Korn zum Brot
    On this guided tour of Heppenheim’s historical old town, children will learn a lot about the history of mills and grain grinding procedures.
